Happy Friday!!!
Another
hot week has come and gone, I'm amazed at how quickly this year has flown by
and that we are now only a couple days from July. We've been so busy that
I've almost overlooked the fact that this is the 15th anniversary of Wild
Turkey Farms. It's amazing to look back at the evolution of our little
business and the progression of the local foods movement over that time frame.
At the same time it's daunting to look forward at how far we have left to
go and imagine the challenges and rewards that come with reinventing the local
economies across this great country.
In
my opinion, our biggest challenge is changing the "Walmart" mindset
of bigger/ cheaper/ faster that most people have developed over the last 30
years. Today it seems that more value is placed on having a quantity of
stuff than on having stuff of quality. People have come to expect food to
be cheap and abundant and it is only viewed as a short term means to satisfy
their hunger as cheaply and conveniently as possible with little thought going
into what they are actually consuming, if they enjoy it a little bit too then
it's all good. This mentality blocks many from even considering the notion that
food is a long term investment into building a healthy body. Not only is
food an investment in health but food has traditionally been a social activity
that builds family and community. As I sit here typing this I'm listening
to the sound of a contractor doing some work on our house and it is a reminder
of how your support of local foods directly infuses cash into local and
regional economies. You pay me, I pay him, he pays the local supply
yards, they get to support their family, and hopefully in the end that cash makes
it's way back into your pocket at some point and not holed up in some corporate
bank account in another state or country. Remember that the cool part of
our economy is that you get to vote on what kind of world you want to live in
every time you spend a dollar so do it with thought.
