Wild Turkey Farms News- June 1
Can't believe that June is already here and boy oh boy did May decide to leave on a hot, humid note. I can take the heat but the humidity makes for a miserable work day. This has been the week for Houdini pigs. Now anyone that's been around pigs (or reading my newsletters for very long) probably understands that it's relatively hard for a pig to disappear but when they do it's probably not a good thing. About 2 weeks ago I decided to turn out a newly weaned grouped of pigs onto pasture. Now as luck would have it, the fence had shorted out elsewhere and left this particular paddock with out any charge. Now, much like leaving the backdoor open at a daycare, it's only a matter of time before the kids are exploring the back yard. Now the larger problem is that once a pig learns to slip through the fence they tend to want to repeat this from time to time. I have dealt with this problem with pigs before but this group seems to have developed "superpowers" that have allowed them to repeat the escape regardless of how much electricity is on the fence. This new found power has opened the door to a world of adventure they never new existed. So far they have visited all of the other pigs, the beehives (luckily no damage to pigs or bees), the creek, the rabbits, the sheep, the barn, and the cows. Each day when I feed there is no telling where they will show up. I just ride around with their bucket of feed until they are located and feed them there. Hopefully they don't turn up in the garden or at the neighbor's house. If they do, I guess we'll run a special on BBQ pigs.......
One more week of school and I'll have my full-time summer help (Rosty & Charlie) around all day long so I'm sure there will be lots of interesting stories to share.
