Wild Turkey Farms News- January 21, 2011

Wild Turkey Farms News- January 21, 2011

What a couple weeks; snow, freezing temps, rain, and then a couple tropical days of 50F + thrown in to boot. Well here's a better late in the day than never newsletter from the farm.

It's been a busy couple weeks as we start gearing up for spring. We've got a few things going in the greenhouse now which always gets us in the mood for warmer weather- if that doesn't work then fighting mud all day will. Yesterday Charlie played hooky from preschool to help me take a few pigs and sheep to the processors. It's surprising how quick kids bounce out of bed to ride for hours in the truck if it means getting out of going to school- but going to Matkins is one of their favorite things to do. By the time we got back it was nearly lunch time and Charlie had decided it should be a "farm day" and not a school day. So after the 3rd time he promised he'd help work and not run off to grandma's house I agreed. Charlie can actually be pretty good help for a 4 year old sometimes. I ground feed while he helped scoop up the ingredients, we fed hay to the cows, gathered the eggs, worked in the greenhouse, and then made our rounds feeding everybody. As with all involved in farming know, the "to do list" never gets completely caught up- sometimes due to weather, sometimes due to time, and sometimes due to good old fashioned procrastination. We'll yesterday the combination of the 3 caught up with me as 2 sows that I'd planned on moving had given birth. So our attention turned from feeding to building fence and moving pigs until dark. Charlie didn't mind though, he just helped me build fence and catch pigs until it started getting dark and getting colder. Only then did he bail on me to go warm up at grandma's house while I finished up. I sure do enjoy Rosty & Charlie's youthful enthusiasm, it helps me remember why I do this.

Can't make it to the Farmers Market - Then Come To The Farm Saturday 2-4pm
We've had several request from customers and neighbors so we'll be set up at the farm Saturday afternoon. We'll have all of our regular farmers markets selections available. If you know what you'd like to order please email us this evening and we'll save it for you.

The farm is at 1015 Old Cress Rd Salisbury NC 28147

Wild Turkey Farms CSA 2011- Community Supported Agriculture or CSA is a relationship between a food producer and food consumers. This buying concept was sprouted from the idea that the customer was investing in a particular farm business they respected by buying a CSA share, similar to buying stock in a company. Our plan is to offer shares for a 10 week period starting mid-late April. We will have a weekly box of our fresh organically grown produce in $12 and $20 shares available. We haven't ironed out all of the details but ours will be with the option to add items like eggs or meats to your weekly pick up. Shares will be available to pick up at the farm during the week. We will have a limited number of shares available so if you are interested please email us to be put on the list.

Day Of The Pig 2011- Wild Turkey Farms & Chef Charles Catering are proud to offer our 1 of a kind Charcuterie Workshop again this year. Once again we will have a full day of exploring the ancient art of transforming a whole pig into delicious cuts, sausages, cured meats, and pates. Class size is limited to maximize hands on, individual instruction so sign up soon. A gourmet wine lunch prepared by Chef Charles and his team is provided.
