SFM Newsletter 05/23/2015

It looks like we'll have great weather this long weekend as we remember those that died in service of our country. As we remember what they died for, perhaps it's also appropriate to remember America's farming traditions that made this country great. As we remember the fallen, perhaps it's also worth remembering the farms and victory gardens that were integral to America's long history of successful military campains.

Here's what we've got lined up for tomorrow!
NEW: Cherry Hill Farm:
Participants of the Rowan County Farm school, Justin and Holly are new to the Salisbury Farmers' Market! In their initial offering they'll have: eggs, broccoli, cabbage, cilantro and squash.
Sounds like a delicious stir fry to me!

McCombs & Company:
Fresh, quality pimento cheese that Verne has been making since 1958. Now back by popular demand--homemade chicken salad! We also make slaw and spicy snack crackers. The "firecrackers" are killer with pimento cheese!

Dover Vineyards:
A new representative, Liz, will be there with wine only. (No jams this week because they ran out!)

Miller Produce:
Mike & co are offering the first field squash and cucumbers of the season. Summer is just around the corner... Plus plenty more Camarosa strawberries, greens and beautiful heads of lettuce.

Correll Farm (Now accepting EBT/SNAP):
Squash, zucchini, cauliflower, asparagus, fresh cabbage, collards, kale, swiss chard, broccoli, broccoli raab, napa cabbage, radishes, kohlrabi, fennel, green garlic, leeks, and sweet onions.
Also: fresh cut herbs including, basil, parsley, oregano, and cilantro.

Eagle Produce Farm:
Kale and mustard greens. Strawberries. Greenhouse tomatoes, squash, zucchini, cucumbers and more
.

Two Pigs Farm:
"No-spray" strawberries, free range eggs, ground turkey, whole turkey (by request only), all kinds of pork cuts and sausage, cornish hens. Kale, swiss chard, spinach and more...

Lee's Fresh Flowers and Vegetables:
Flowers: bachelors buttons, peonies, snap dragons, larkspur, purple queens and sweet williams.
Vegetables: spinach, spring onion, green garlic
, lettuce, pea shoots, baby boc choi and dill.

How Sweet It Is:
Morning muffins, pound cake, coffee cake, cookies and more!

Country Garden:
Selling strawberries, an assortment of plants and more...

Treehouse Soaps:
New: Shaving soap designed specifically for shaving (with conditioning, moisturizing oils & butters, plus clay for "slip"), Beer super lather soap, Goat milk sweet ginger (new)
.

Bread Basket:
Special items: blueberry and cinammon swirl breads, a variety of pies, croutons. And the usual assortment of breads, coffee cakes, granola, gluten and sugar free items. And of course donuts.

Here's what we had last week (I didn't get this week's update): Whole Rainbow Trout, Black Drum, Yellowfin Tuna, Yellowtail Snapper Whole, Swordfish, Cod, Flounder, Mahi Mahi, Grouper, Pompano, Salmon (Faroe Island Scotland), Lg & Jumbo Sea Scallops, Large  & Jumbo Shrimp, Lump Crab Meat, VA Oysters.

The Funky Pepper:
Homemade jams, jellies and mustard
.

Bame Farms (A new vendor this year):
Grassfed beef, pastured pork, free range eggs and meat variety packs
.

(And probably another vendor or two that I've neglected!, If you're a vendor and you're reading this thinking "why isn't my name here?" Please send me an email next week 24 hours before market.)

"Riot in the Pasture":
Our event this year was a great success. Well over 400 people attended and tried local, pasture raised barbeque from Two Pigs Farm and Wild Turkey Farms. Other vendors that participated included: Miller Produce (donor) and Correll Farms (donor), Two Pigs Farm (donor), Bread Basket, Lee's Fresh Flowers and Produce, Eagle Farm, Third Creek Cottage Gardens. We also featured Upside Down Farms (a newly approved mushroom vendor!) and Katie's Farm strawberries.
