Market Chef Returns. (August 8)
Youth edition!
If you were at the Salisbury Farmers' Market last year, you may have caught the market chef competition. Here's coverage from last year's infamous bitter melon edition: http://www.salisburypost.com/2014/08/12/market-chef-competition-continues/
This competition is like the shows on TV. There's furious chopping, suprise ingredients (but hopefully no injuries! especially in this youth edition!)
 
 
Here's what we've got today:
 
AM:
Jack Gill is back.
The self-styled greens man is back. Currently carrying Charleston grey and another seeded watermelon variety. And lima beans.
 
Eagle Produce Farm (AM, accepts WIC & senior vouchers)
Beautiful purple, red and green bell peppers, cayenne peppers, jalepeƱos. Bicolor corn. Slicing and cherry tomatoes. Varieties including Virginia sweet, Cherokee purple, better boy, German Johnson, Big Beef, Crista, Roma. A variety of potatoes inclusing blue, red, Yukon gold. And eggplant. Also: a variety of peppers, green beans, potatoes, cucumbers, squash (including eight ball and patty pan), zucchini, onions, okra. NC nectarines, SC peaches. GA onions. Rowan County canteloupe (from off farm right now with Eagle farm melons coming back in a week or two).

How Sweet it Is (AM):
Lemon streusel muffins, harvest muffins, lemon raspberry muffins. Pound cake (lemon, chocolate & regular), brownies (butterscotch and regular), sour scream cinammon coffee cake, chocolate chip cookies, pumpkin bread, banana nut bread and more!
 
Lee's Fresh Flowers & Vegetables (AM):
Gone today...
 
All Grown Up (AM):
Local melons (including watermelons, musk melon, honeydew) slowing down a lot..., peppers (various hot and bell peppers), Swiss chard, Kale, yellow squash, Stringless beans, tomatoes (brandywine, cherry and hertiage red), Persian cucumbers, plus herbs, a DASH of arugula, okra.

Miller Produce (AM, accepts FMNP vouchers):
We still have a decent supply of sweet corn this morning (as of 9:40 AM) and squash, zucchini, cucumbers, cabbage, homegrown tomatoes, onions and Rowan canteloupe, okra, peppers and Huffman peaches.
 
Pruett Farm (AM):
Various red and Russian pink tomatoes, cucumbers, green peppers, squash, zucchini.
 
PM:
Two Pigs Farm (PM, accepts FMNP vouchers):
Peaches without any sprays! Whole chickens, ground turkey, duck, beef, plus pastured eggs and all kinds of pork. Plus squash, tomatoes,  potatoes and zucchini.

Upcoming Events:
August 8th, Youth Market Chef! A competition between youth chefs showing their cooking prowess! We'll have another one in September as well.
 
There's also a healthy living cooking series Wednesdays, August 5, 12 and 19, 9am-11am. At N.C. State University’s Plants for Human Health Institute in Kannapolis. Space is limited! Reserve a spot by calling 704-250-5400 or emailing phhi_info@ncsu.edu.
